Kompass for Basecamp - initial thoughts

I've just been playing around with a beta version of Kompass for Basecamp.  Kompass is a browser-based interface for Basecamp (web-based project management solution) designed for mobile devices.  I spent 20 minutes testing it on my HTC Hero running Android 2.1 using the xScope6 browser.  My initial thoughts:

  • Nice clean interface
  • Much better than using Basecamp native in a mobile browser
  • Good use of buttons near top of screen: "Back to Previous", "Back to Dashboard"
  • Tabs at top for "projects", "Milestones, "To Do's" make for easy navigation
  • Screens load quickly ( a couple of seconds with a good 3G signal)
  • Good use of buttons creates app-like feel (eg.g "Create New Milestone" button in Milestones section
  • Because it is browser-based the data updates instantly - no need to sync as with apps

I'm not a power-user of Basecamp so cannot really comment on how good this app would be for people that run their business around the application.  The inability to use Writeboards and see attached files may be a problem for some people.  However, my initial thoughts are positive and I can see it's use as primarily for checking the status of projects rather than adding lots of messages, milestones, To Do's etc to them from a mobile phone.  I have tested it against the Beacon Android app for Basecamp and there is little between them in terms of speed.  I suppose that Beacon has the edge in terms of being able to browse projects off-line.  However, Beacon does not allow you to add or edit items off-line so is not much better than Kompass in this regard.  Being web-based, Kompass can add updates to their service without the user having to download them as with apps.  If you can get a beta invitation from Kompass I'd recommend giving it a go.  I don't know whether they will be charging for it when it goes live so that might be an issue in the future.
