You get what you pay for
Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 11:29AM Broadstuff's Alan Patrick has long been a critic of the sustainability of many "free" web services and his recent post about the service levels non-paying users can expect makes a lot of sense. If you're not paying for the service beyond looking at some embedded adverts then dedicating staff to answer queries and sort problems makes little sense for the provider. My experience with Twitter bears this out - I was suspended last week for some unspecified reason (as I hardly ever Twittered I cannot think why I have been cut off). Despite using their feedback form, I have not found out why my account has been suspended or if I will ever be reconnected. As the company only has a handful of employees and millions of users, I'm not surprised at the lack of response and accept you get what you pay for. This is part of the reason I am now paying Squarespace to host this site - peace of mind. As Alan Patricks says, "...we strongly recommend one never puts anything of any value on free Cloud services."
